The essay traces the summer session to a summer school directed by E. C. Glass held on the grounds of the University of Virginia, 1897-1905. Hand corrections changed the date to 1896 and note that at least one summer school was held in 1880. The essay traces the session through the first official summer session of the University of Virginia in 1906 under Bruce Payne, and traces its development under Charles G. Maphis, George B. Zehmer, and Lindley J. Stiles. The essay is accompanied by an organization chart.
